Postgres Women Funds

Lætitia Avrot
Hi everyone,

I'm sorry for that long inactivity period: life happened.

So, I met several members of Postgres Women at Brussels (FOSDEM) and we discussed an idea
I particularly love: Having funds for women to be able to speak at conf talk events or to
simply come as attendees to conf talk events (I'd rather these funds to be used to pay for
speaker accommodation, though).

There are two ways to take care of that kind of a foundation :
- Either we manage the money and to do so we need to create an association (with elected board and so on) (option 1)
- Either we use PostgreSQL Europe (and PostgreSQL US) and ask them to create a budget for diversity and manage the money for us (option 2)
- Or you can always say it's a bad idea (option 3)
- Or that you don't care (option 4)

Vote will be open until the 28th of February, 23:59, CET.

Cheers,

Lætitia

Re: Postgres Women Funds

Hi,
We already have a modest fund within PgUS, to foster the growth and inclusivity in the United States. https://postgresql.us/diversity/ We've used it for travel reimbursements, with conference registrations typically comped.

I would think it would be appropriate for PostgreSQL Europe also to create a budget for diversity to support its membership.

While not recognized as a "community" conference by PGDG, Postgres Conference 2019 offers volunteer opportunities to the local Women Who Code chapter who receive complimentary registration. This opportunity is open to any underrepresented group or in need of financial support (i.e. unemployed or student).

I'd also recommend having a "pay it forward", where the individual uses what they've learned to support other individuals. It's a vital component of our scholarship program in another professional group that I'm involved with.

Sincerely,
Debbie
